MICHAEL ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE SEATTLE TIMES - AUGUST 14
Seattle drummer Michael Shrieve and his band Spellbinder are a regular fixture at the Fremont bar ToST. But long before Shrieve moved to Seattle to raise a family, he was the drummer for Santana, a relatively unknown band when it played Woodstock 40 years ago this weekend. Shrieve's performance, his band and Woodstock would become the stuff of legends.

NOTE FROM MICHAEL
We are in the thick of a 40th Anniversary Woodstock Celebration this week and we want to continue it up until Spellbinder's Monday night show at Tost in Seattle. Chris Lang, owner of Tost has proposed that we open the doors and make it a free night of music in honor of the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock!

We will also, for the first time, play "Soul Sacrifice", the Santana song featured in the Woodstock film. Percussionist Johnny Conga will be on hand to help us play this song, since there were two conga drummers on the original. So come on down and help us celebrate!

I also wanted to mention that 2 time Oscar winning documentary film maker Barbara Kopple's new film, "Woodstock, Then and Now" will air tonight, Friday Aug. 14th at 9:00 PM on VH-1. I was interviewed extensively for this by my friend Soundgarden and Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron, and Barbara Kopple as well and they also filmed the band's set at Tost. Now, you never know what ends up in these things and what goes to the cutting room floor, but I've heard I'm in it, so I just wanted to give you a heads up. This will also be aired Monday night on the History Channel. Check your local times for this.

"LIVE AT TOST" NOW AVAILABLE

Michael Shrieve's Spellbinder is proud to release their debut CD, Live at Tost, recorded during their Monday night residency at Tost in Fremont. Visit the Music page for more information.

As Earshot Jazz Magazine said: "[Michael Shrieve is] playing better than at any time in decades. And, at these late-evening shows at ToSt, in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle, he has a power-packed band to render a vision that is part-Santana and part a whole lot else: blazing guitarist Danny Godinez, Hammond B3 warrior Joe Doria, John Fricke playing an electrified trumpet, and bass phenom Farko Dosumov, from Uzbekistan, one of the finest musicians on any instrument in the region."
